2. Adjunct Faculty Evaluation

Ongoing evaluation of AHU contract faculty performance is a critical element in the efforts to achieve excellence in education. Useful feedback not only informs but also validates the educator as an important member of the faculty.
Faculty evaluation at AHU is divided into a formative and a summative evaluation process. Formative evaluation validates the faculty’s current performance and provides direction for improving future performance. Summative evaluation takes place after the formative evaluation process and is used by University Administration for making personnel decisions.
2.1 Formative Evaluation
The major area included in the formative evaluation of contract faculty is teaching. This skill is assessed through input from students and the Department Chair.
2.2 Teaching
Activities classified as teaching are varied, since teaching includes all of the activities that are associated with the educational process. Faculty are not only expected to have expertise in their field, but to communicate and interact with students in an effective manner. The most obvious arena for evaluating teaching effectiveness is within the classroom, laboratory, or clinical environment.
2.3 Summative Evaluation
Course evaluations are administered for each course taught by adjunct instructors. In addition, adjuncts who are continuously employed throughout an academic year will have annual evaluations. Annual evaluations must include documentation of feedback on student input, course management, and teaching skills. See Appendix B - Adjunct Teaching Evaluation Rubric
