Students enrolling in the Health Sciences degree program are those who plan to continue their education in areas such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, or other medical fields. The program prepares students for admission to professional programs by helping them earn some of their general education requirements for those programs.

This track is designed to provide a pathway towards the completion of the associate degree in Health Sciences for students who have completed the medical assistant certificate program at an accredited institution and are currently certified or licensed by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), American Medical Technologist (AMT), or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).

The program will include a total of 64 trimester credit hours: 21 credits by Validation from a completed MA program, 21 credits of math and science, 21 credits of general education courses, and a 1-hour Capstone course. Students must have a minimum of 64 credit hours to be eligible for graduation. The program is designed to be completed in 4 trimesters but may be accelerated with approval by the department chair and office of Academic Administration.

Admission

To be accepted into the Health Sciences degree program, students must meet the general requirements for admission to AdventHealth University (see General Studies Admission in the Admission Information section), and:

1. Submit the Health Sciences​ Program Application once admitted to the University. The application can be accessed at http://my.ahu.edu.
2. Have a minimum cumulative high school unweighted GPA of 2.70 or have taken 12 college credits at a regionally accredited college with a minimum GPA of 2.70. GPAs presented to the admissions committee for each applicant will be a cumulative record of all college-level work.
3. Have a minimum ACT composite score of 19 or a minimum combined score of 910 on the SAT (rSAT: 990). Applicants having 24 or more college-level credits from a regionally accredited college are exempt from this requirement.

4. Have successfully completed a licensed Medical Assisting course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

5. Possess a Medical Assistant certification or licensure.

Progression

Students may progress in the Health Sciences degree program when they:

1. Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50
2. Earn a minimum grade of “C” (2.00) on all math and science requirements
3. Successfully repeat courses in which a minimum grade of “C” (2.00) was not achieved
4. Do not exceed University Repeat Policy
5. Validation for, or completion of, CPTR 105 Introduction to Computers

Readmission 

Students are considered for readmission to the Health and Biomedical Science (HBS) program when they meet admission requirements and: 

• Readmission is not automatic and is contingent on available class space and the discretion of the Department Chair.

Students will be readmitted under new academic catalog program policies. Eligible students will be considered for readmission to the program when they complete the following:

• Submit a Readmission Form to the Health and Biomedical program Chair eight weeks before the trimester in which seeking admission. 
• Undergo a faculty review of prior academic performance, including reason(s) for withdrawal or dismissal, along with evidence of the applicant’s efforts to strengthen areas of weakness. 

Completion

AdventHealth University will consider students for graduation and conferral of an Associate of Science degree in Health Sciences when they have met the general University requirements for graduation (see Graduation in the Academic Information section), and have:

1. Completed the prescribed course of study.
2. Completed a minimum of 64 hours of credit
3. Achieved a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 on all math and science requirements.
4. Achieved a minimum grade of “C” (2.00) or above in all other required courses and electives for the degree.
5. Complete the service-learning requirement.
6. Completion of the University Residency Policy.

Curriculum

The courses required for all students enrolled in the Associate of Science degree program include General Psychology; Introduction to Microcomputers; English Composition I and II; World Civilization I or II; Introduction to Public Speaking; Health and Wellbeing; and six hours of religion courses.
